Topic Discussion: Segway inventor takes aim at thirst with Slingshot <--- Click Me (文章)
Questions for Discussion:
Session 1
(1) Have you ever heard of or ridden the Segway scooter? If so, what do you think about the Segway? Before this article, have you heard of the Slingshot water purifier? After dropping out of college, Dean Kamen became a multi-millionaire by coming up with these devices. Do you have any cool ideas that may make you rich one day?
(2) Why does Dean Kamen think that water shortage is a health problem more serious than AIDS or malnutrition? Do you agree?
(3) Do you think this device can help provide drinking water during emergency situations, such as the recent Typhoon Morakot disaster?
Session 2
(4) The Slingshot is a water purifier capable of turning any liquid into pure drinking water. Were you ever inspired to build a similar device? Do you agree with Kamen that this is more impressive than "turning lead into gold"?
(5) In Paragraph 13, Kamen mentions this device costs several hundred thousand USD to build right now (at least $6.6 million NTD),
but he hopes to lower the price to $2000 USD ($66,000 TWD) after more research. Is there a market for this device, in your opinion?
(6) According to Paragraph 16, more than 3.5 million people die every year from water-related diseases and almost 900 million don't have access to a safe water supply. Therefore, do you think it is correct to say that having purified water is more essential then having any other commodities? Please share your opinions on this.
