Topic Discussion Article: Meet the Transumers (文章)
Questions for Discussion:
Session 1
1. Do you currently rent anything? What kinds of things would you rather rent than buy? What are some of the advantages or disadvantages of renting when compared to buying?
2. According to this article, "Transumers are consumers driven to collect experiences instead of objects". In your opinion, what defines a transumer?
3. Are you a transumer? After reading this article, do you want to lead a "transient" life? Would you feel less burden in your life if you did not have to buy a house or car?
Session 2
4. In the U.S., almost everything can be rented. Do you think more rental businesses could prosper in Taiwan? What would happen if suddenly you can rent the latest fashionable bags or electronic gadgets by simply paying a monthly fee? What would be a reasonable monthly fee for you?
5. Have you ever bartered goods for something you need, for example on an Internet forum or the PTT? Would it be possible to get valuable or premium products by bartering? Have you ever been scammed in an exchange, say the bartered good had a hidden flaw? How did you deal with it?
6. Transumerism is a lifestyle that's "less about treasure and more about pleasure". Can you suggest some negative effects of this "transient" lifestyle? What if everything could be rented, would more people be out of work or less?
