Dear Taichung Happiers,

What we create is what we focus on. Remember the “satisfy your hunger without eating too much” topic? Yes, that gathering was hosted by Joey before Chinese New Year holiday. After examining the “Jogging Techniques for Beginners” article he offers for this weekend, we can have the picture in our minds about what he is focusing on.

Why jogging? Joey asks. Well, health is the most common motivation of jogging, and researchers have proved regular jogging can greatly improve our life expectancy.
http://www.escardio.org/about/press/press-releases/pr-12/Pages/regular-jogging-increases-life-expectancy.aspx Besides, a new trend contributes the population growth of themed races—people have a very strong desire of challenges and new experiences to participate mud runs, glow runs, color runs, zombie runs, etc. However, Sir Roger Bannister, an English former athlete and distinguished neurologist, had more: "We run, not because we think it is doing us good, but because we enjoy it and cannot help ourselves...The more restricted our society and work become, the more necessary it will be to find some outlet for this craving for freedom. No one can say, 'You must not run faster than this, or jump higher than that.' The human spirit is indomitable." Here in Taiwan, we are not short of an example: In Taipei, a road race themed anti-nuclear will be held later this month. Furthermore, the following short poem tells something beyond what we thought.

Mexicans Begin Jogging (by Gary Soto)

At the factory I worked
In the fleck of rubber, under the press
Of an oven yellow with flame,
Until the border patrol opened
Their vans and my boss waved for us to run.
"Over the fence, Soto," he shouted,
And I shouted that I was an American.
"No time for lies," he said, and passes
A dollar in my palm, hurrying me
Through the back door.

Since I was on his time, I ran
And became the wag to a short tail of Mexicans--
Ran past the amazed crowds that lined
The street and blurred like photographs, in rain.
I ran from that industrial road to the soft
Houses where people paled at the turn of an autumn sky.
What could I do but yell vivas
To baseball, milkshakes, and the sociologists
Who would clock me
As I jog into the next century
On the power of a great, silly grin.

Why jogging? The benefits might take us by surprise. While the English author Neil Gaiman is revealing the “3D” elements of creativity (desperation, deadlines, and daydreaming), we are also enlightened by the American author and naturalist Henry David Thoreau’s incredible tip: "Methinks that the moment my legs began to move, my thoughts began to flow." So, are you thinking ahead to the next project? Go jogging. Struggling with writer’s block? Go jogging. Attending our gathering? Jog to Mos Burger this Saturday-- the heavier your breath sounds, the more thoughts you can share! Oh, by the way, remember to sing along.
