Thanks a lot for your attention.

Questions:
1. Sampling techniques are utilized in statistics to survey a specific subset of a population. But some sample errors like deviations should be taken into consideration. However, in the age of big data, sampling size is the right population to the specific problem and there are no sampling errors. With the help of advanced computing ability and software, the desired output may be processed and calculated within only 5 minutes. These two tools help us to solve specific problems more precisely and easily. Have you ever taken courses or had a job assignment about statistics? If you have, could you share with us about your experience and what desired results you wanted to know from your statistics? How will big data affect our lives?

2. In the big data era, we don’t need to know how it was and we just need to know how it is going to be. Finding correlations is far more important than causation. Problem solving approach is better than root cause analysis approach. Do you agree or disagree with the statement like that? Why or why not?

3. In the age of big data, the amount of data doubles every two years. We need to select valuable information in great volume of data.
(1) Information comes in different type of formats like text, audio, video and web page. What kinds of materials are valuable to you? How do you obtain the information and how often do you access to the database?
(2) How do you keep and digest these useful data? And how do you take advantage of these materials for your life and work?

4. Do you pay attention to the newest trends and applications of science or technology like Google glasses, 3D printer shale gas, cloud computing, and electric cars? If yes, what intrigues you most? Could you share it with us?

Dear Taichung Happiers,

How can we succeed in reaching perfect accuracy in our beliefs?

A physicist, an engineer, and a statistician go hunting. They see a deer in the distance and the physicist takes the first shot, missing low because in his calculations he assumed he was shooting in a vacuum. The engineer shoots next, raising her rifle too much to account for air resistance, and misses high. The statistician yells, “we got it!”.

Having accomplished his google and cloud computing topics, our host Kevin is now directing our attention to his episode 3: Big Data. As we all know that innovation is the best investment; nevertheless, innovation without the data can be beautiful yet powerless. Data scientists and pioneering companies are analyzing data for not only a more successful business but also a better humanity future. “The goal is to turn data into information, and information into insight”, Carly Fiorina, former executive, president, and chair of Hewlett-Packard Co., claimed so. The article’s author also reminds us that “Big data can include digitized documents, photographs, videos, audio files, tweets, and other social networking posts, e-mails, text messages, phone records, search engine queries, RFID tag and barcode scans and financial transaction records, though those aren't the only sources.” How do we feel about these endless sources? How about this “Cloud of Identity”?

The creative usages of the wider and deeper data can help confront some toughest challenges of social, economic and environmental issues. Therefore, “Big data is not about the data”, says Prof. Gary King. “It’s about what you do with the data.” http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rh_Jvspojow Dealing with the data, we have to bear in mind that the human sensory system and the brain are unbelievably influential and adaptable data collectors. Steve Lohr was a foreign correspondent for The Times and part of the team awarded the Pulitzer Prize for Explanatory Reporting in 2013. He argued: “Listening to the data is important… but so is experience and intuition. After all, what is intuition at its best but large amounts of data of all kinds filtered through a human brain rather than a math model?” To see big implications for the way society scrutinizes and associates with the future humanities is like to mine our expectations and fears buried in the unconscious-- their meanings won’t grow clearer until we pay enough attention to them. Let us look for this glass, shall we?
