It’s a very big world that we live in, but in some ways it seems smaller than ever.
The effects of globalization have brought some parts of society together, and technology has made it easier to travel to and communicate with people that live far away from us. The powerful media informs us of things that happen around the world almost instantly.
This part of globalization seems good. But what happens to the individual person’s thoughts, values and independence in such a world?
Some people believe that globalization is really just a fancy word for international capitalism, the system by which the rich countries get richer and the poor ones stay poor. Thus, it is often large corporations that influence both advertising and the media in many different countries. And as corporations and the technology they produce become more powerful, it becomes harder for people in these countries to think independently and form unique values about the world. In particular, it is hard for young students and teens to form ideas that are not influenced by the media.
Industrial societies like Taiwan can dehumanize individuals. But there are ways that we can resist the normative influences of corporations, media the technology.
For example, we can make an effort to live closer to and with more respect for
nature. We may choose to turn off our computers, to ride bicycles or walk instead of driving, and to make arts and crafts instead of watching TV and playing digital games. We can read books written by people from other counties and cultures.
Perhaps the most important thing is deciding not to be influenced by the media and the standards of others: don’t buy things just because they are advertised, and don’t’ believe all of the ideas expressed on TV and in newspapers. Likewise, don’t passively accept the opinions of your friends or your family. Serious problems often result from people’s tendency to align themselves with other people’s ideas before they stop to think for themselves.
Perhaps we need to redefine what a “good life” or a “better life” is.
Does it mean more speed, more competition, and more money (which are things advertising, the media, and technology dictate we should want)?
Perhaps it should mean something simpler, more soulful and more spiritual.
Re-humanize yourself----start thinking independently about what your priorities are,
And you will have a healthier and more satisfying future. Don’t you think so?
Vocabulary:
1. humanize V. 變得有人性

7. likewise adv. 同樣地
8. passively adv.被動地

2. Do you use MSN to communicate with your friends? What’s the better way to promote your friendship?

5. Please give 3 activities for how to humanize yourself.
