The moon has been a source of wonder ever since man first looked upwards to take in its beauty. In the night sky, the moon is usually concealed by something other than clouds. This part that is invisible to the naked eye on Earth is where the sun doesn’t shine. What we do see of the moon each evening is the section that the sun lights up, or illuminates.
The moon is a sphere that rotates around the earth as it travels around the sun. It takes the moon about one month, an average of 29.5 days, to revolve around the earth. Naturally, during the course of a lunar revolution, the view changes from evening to evening. There are eight distinct views or “phases” of the moon.
Although there are eight different lunar phases, our calendars typically list the most obvious four: New Moon, First Quarter, Full Moon, and Last Quarter. These phases are cause by the positions of the moon and the sun together in the sky. When the two objects are closest, we see the New Moon. It is during this time of the lunar orbit that the moon is practically invisible. When the sun and moon are farthest apart, the moon is full and bright.
Since no month is 29.5 days long, whatever phase of the moon that starts the month usually comes again at the end of the month. Approximately ever 2.7 years, there are two Full Moons in a month. When this happens, the second one is called a Blue Moon. The expression, “Once in a blue moon,” is derived from this rare occurrence. Shining bright in the sky, the moon and its many phases will continue to amaze all who look upon it.

Many people believe the full moon affects how we feel and act. They say people do crazy things, get into more accidents, and even can't sleep. These ideas come from folklore and are found in many cultures. More crimes, deaths, and births are also supposed to happen during a full moon. Modern-day studies show different results. For example, it has been proved that births do not increase, but dog bites do.
A lunatic is an insane person. This English word comes from luna, the Latin word for moon. One French word for mood, lun, also comes from luna. These words show how strongly people have believed in a connection between the moon and human behavior. Long ago in France, people who committed a crime during a full moon were set free. It was believed the full moon made them crazy and therefore they weren't considered guilty.
The most famous full moon stories are about werewolves. Although these stories were made up centuries ago, some people still think they really exist. If you are out at night during a full moon, be extra careful. You never know who or what might be hiding in the shadows.
Vocabulary:
1.lunar 月的 2.orbit 軌道 3. folklore 民間傳說 4.werewolves 狼人
Questions:
1.Have you ever heard any legend of the moon? What's that?
2.Can you tell the time by lunar phases?
3.Do you think the full moon affects you?
4. Imagine that if there is no moon during the night, what will the world be?
