Topic: Stock Investing 101

Source: Advanced English January 2001 p.12~13

GOT SOME CASH?
Let’s say you have some extra money you’d like to put to work. A few investment options immediately come to mind. You could put the money into a time deposit(定期存款) in the bank. That’s a relatively safe choice, but the rate of return is depressingly low. You could start your won business, but that can be an all-consuming and risky proposition. It might take years of 18-hour days before you see any profit, or you might fail and lose everything.
Another investment alternative is to buy shares in a publicly-traded company. This offers the potential for returns that far exceed single-digit bank interest. And you needn’t work day and night to make your investment pay off. The managers and employees of the company will do that for you. If the succeed, profits will be divided among the shareholders(股東) in the from of dividends. The value of the company’s stock may also go up. It you can sell above your buying price, you will realize a capital gain(資本收益).
Using some or all of your investment proceeds, you can expand your portfolio(投資人有價證券的財產目錄) by buying into other promising companies. Eventually, your investments might make you financially independent or even wealthy!
On the other hand, you may find that stock investing is a very easy way to lose money. Companies can post losses as well as profits, stock prices can move down as well as up, and nobody can predict with certainty what he financial future holds.
Assessing general economic conditions and the prospects of any particular company is no simple task. For this reason, many investors get help with their investment decisions. Some rely on stockbrokers and personal financial advisors who make informed recommendations. Others buy shares in mutual funds. Each mutual fund is guided by knowledgeable fund managers who decide which stocks to buy or sell. Well-managed funds make money for their investors, which in turn attracts new investors. In America, there are now thousands of different mutual funds, many of which specialize according to market sector, geographic area of investment strategy.
The Internet revolution has affected stock investing in two very significant ways. First, the Internet has made the investing process open to the masses as never before. Laypeople(外行人)can now study financial markets and perform stock transactions on-line, easily and cheaply. Second, the rise of the Internet has spawned the “dot-coms,” companies that provide Internet-related services. Many dot-coms and other tech companies have seen spectacular run-ups in stock value in recent years, making some investors overnight millionaires. These huge gains have pulled in hungry new hordes of stock buyers, drooling at the thought of easy money.
But while the Internet has greatly spurred investor interest, it has done little to reduce investment risk. Many once-high-flying tech stocks have nosedived in the past year, proving yet again the maxim that stock investors should never forget:” There ain’t no such thing as a sure thing!”

Questions:

1. How do you keep your savings ?
2. What's your perspective on "investment " ?
3. Have you ever tried to learn about "stock" ? What's your knowledge about it?
