You need stuff to live. You need food to eat, water to drink and (at least in most climates) a roof over your head. At a basic level, stuff is necessary for survival. The question is, how much stuff do you really need? And, how can you own things without having them control your life?

I think these are important questions to answer for anyone living in an industrialized country today. We are rapidly reaching the point where basic necessities are almost guaranteed. The problem is no longer getting enough stuff to survive, it's deciding the role stuff plays in our lives.

Unfortunately, I don't think many people are actively tackling this question. Instead, they are just letting television commercials and celebrity magazines decide for them.

--------------------------------------------------------------

Questions
1. What does "stuff" in this article mean? Do you think you have more "stuff" than you need in your life?

2. Due to the global market turmoil, families and individuals have certainly been cutting down their monthly/daily expenses. What's the first item you decide to cut down on? Big dinners? Movies? Books? Or Clothes? Please share with your group mates and compare the differences we hold.

3. If you were laid off from your current job, and if the only job you could get is a subpar job you dislike and the salary of which is only half of your last paycheck, would you be willing to take this job, or would you hang in there a bit to wait for a more fulfilling job to come?

4. Surely enough, you must have collected your 3600 consumer vouchers that the government issued on Jan. 18. How will you deal with it? If you haven't spent the money and it's still in your hands, what do you plan to do with it?

5. Do you think the name "consumer voucher" is appropriate for the 3600? Please discuss the definition of each of the following term with your group members and choose the best one you agree on for the name.

consumer voucher
shopping coupon
(economic) stimulation payment
consumption payment
coupon
stimulation ticket
