Topic::Jonathan Livingston Seagull
source: by Brant Burke
Thousands of seagulls are chasing a fishing boat for food. But Jonathan Livingston Seagull is all alone, far far away from them. He is very thin and bony. He practices flying all the time and eats very little. He dreams of becoming a flying master. The other seagulls think he is crazy.
Jonathan wants to see just how fast he can fly. He dives down from one thousand feet ten times. Every time, he loses control and crashed into the ocean. He almost dies! Jonathan is ready to give up. Suddenly, he realizes he should pull in his wings a little. He makes it! He is now the world’s fastest seagull.
Jonathan wants to share his experience with the flock. But the elders are very angry. They tell him that a seagull’s goal is just to eat. Jonathan does not agree. He raises his voice and says that life is more than just eating. Nobody has ever talked back to the elders. Everyone is shocked and Jonathan gets kicked out.
Jonathan feels very sad, but it’s not because he is alone. It’s because nobody wants to learn new things. With his flying tricks, Jonathan finds delicious live fish. Seeing his flock fighting over dead fish and bad bread. Jonathan feels really sorry for them. Right then, two special seagulls come to Jonathan.
The two seagulls lead Jonathan to another world. Jonathan is surprised to find out all the seagulls there love flying. Jonathan also meets Chiang, the gull who knows the most about flying. Chiang helps Jonathan perfect flying. But he also teaches him about love and kindness. Jonathan feel he must go back to his flock and share his secrets of flying.
When Jonathan goes back, many gulls don’t want to talk to him. But Jonathan forgives them. At first, only a few students join his flying class. Slowly, A few students become thousands of students. Jonathan teaches them more than flying. He lets them know that life has no limit. If you believe in yourself, nothing is impossible.
Questions:
1. How do you think the Seagull Jonathan’s story reflect our life and society?
2.When you meet someone like Jonathan who is more creative in our society, would you like to follow him (or her) or just obey the elders?
3.Have you ever tried to change the old habits of yours in your life to make different experiences? Do you think it’s good or bad? Why?
4.Share us your successful experiences for believing yourself. Then you achieve your goal.
5.What have you learned from today’s meeting?
