Questions for Discussion:
Session 1
1. This article is a transcript of a news clip. Were you able to watch the video clip at the top of the webpage? Do you agree that watching an English video clip with a transcript or English subtitles is a good way to sharpen your listening and speaking skills? Why? Would you like to share some other tips for mastering English listening and speaking with us?
2. Uniqlo is also coming to Taiwan. What do you know about Uniqlo? Why do you think the company is so successful that its CEO has become the richest man in Japan? Would you like to visit its store in Taipei after its opening in October? Why?
3. Where do you buy your clothes, at night markets, in chain stores, in department stores, or on the net? Why do you prefer shopping that way? What are your favorite apparel brands, if any? Why do you prefer them?
Session 2
4. How often do you go shopping? Do you prefer to go shopping alone, or do you prefer to do so with your friends? Do you consider yourself good company when you go shopping with others? Share with us the reasons for your responses to each question above.
5. As the article mentions, Uniqlo dominates the Japanese apparel market, and now it’s reaching out to global markets. Do you think it would be successful outside Japan? What are some hurdles for companies expanding overseas?
6. Uniqlo already runs a shop in the SoHo district of New York City, but the company still wants to open another shop on Fifth Avenue. Have you ever been to NYC before? What does opening a shop on Fifth Avenue signify to you?.
