Topic Discussion Article: Commodities Beat Stocks, Bonds, Dollar in 2010 as All Asset Prices Advance
Questions for discussion
Session 1
1. Why did investors snap up raw material as China’s growth? If you were the investor, what would you think about the growth of China, US, and Euro region? And what would you do?
2. Why are financial assets bolstered by low global interest rates? If only one country had put a fiscal and monetary policy (low interest rates) into practice in the past, what might have happened to that country and others in the world? Please provide some examples. Why did the Federal Reserve pump $600 billion in the U.S. economy? Did they make it? What are the positive and the negative effects? Please offer some examples.
3. Please take one kind of goods as an example, and explain why its price is going up or down? How do you feel about your life and the present financial status? The article mentions that “On speculation that supply would fail to keep pace with rising demand in China.” Do you agree with the statement or not? If yes, what will you do under this circumstance? Will you buy more commodities and stock them? Or will you produce commodities by yourself? For example, you may work as an agriculturist or a miner. If you will, are you willing to do business with mainland people? Why or why not?
Session 2
4. Do you think that the economy is gearing up? If not, why are Taiwanese stocks and Taipei’s real estate prices getting higher? If yes, why cannot many people afford a house in Taipei in their life time? Where exactly does the money go?
5. What does “longer- dated contracts cost more than those for immediate delivery” mean? And what dose “Immediate delivery cost more than those for longer- dated contracts” mean? What is cash price? What is forward price? How to make money from these two circumstances?
6. “Economies are up and some of the darkest fears of the pessimists did not come to fruition,” Creatura said. “The U.S. and global economies, while they’re not firing on all cylinders, are moving forward.” Please make some comments on Creatura’s opinion.
