Dear Taichung Happiers,

A doctor receives a phone call from his colleague while having dinner with his wife.
“We need a fourth for poker,” says the colleague.
“I’ll be right over,” responds the doctor.

As he is putting on his coat, his wife asks, “It’s serious, then?”

Dear Lord, please hide Troy’s girlfriend from reading the above joke. All right, now, seriously, our host Nathan has a strong desire to investigate further about gambling addiction. Actually, Mark Twain had seen why gambling is so addictive-- “A dollar picked up in the road is more satisfaction to us than the 99 which we had to work for, and the money won at Faro or in the stock market snuggles into our hearts in the same way." (Faro is a French gambling card game.) And, using functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) to take dimensions of brain activity patterns while volunteers play a gambling game, Dr. Luke Clark (the Director of Studies in Natural Sciences (Psychology), Trinity Hall, University of Cambridge) had the research findings suggesting: “Gambling games promote an ‘illusion of control’: the belief that the gambler can exert skill over an outcome that is actually defined by chance.” In the article The Psychology of Gambling http://www.cam.ac.uk/research/news/the-psychology-of-gambling , Dr. Luke Clark also pointed out some biological determinants, such as dopamine imbalance and the damage to the orbitofrontal region, can contribute to problem gambling.
