Dear Taichung Happiers,

Our first-time host Jim is neither Santa, nor the dentist inventing trick-or-treat, yet his topic will make us lost for words due to its sweetness and colorfulness. This topic will make our hearts beating with anticipation. Guess what magic it possesses?

Public speaker and philosopher Jiddu Krishnamurti (12 May 1895 – 17 February 1986) claimed “You must understand the whole of life, not just one little part of it. That is why you must read, that is why you must look at the skies, that is why you must sing and dance, and write poems and suffer and understand, for all that is life." Now, in the 21st Century, the sweet voice just comes from our instinct: how about adding another “must”—playing video games? Ladies and gentlemen, please say thanks to our host Jim for this fantastic topic: This is what Candy Crush Saga does to your brain.

What makes video game a must? In the brain scientist Daphne Bavelier’s presentation, she explores how video games have influential effects on many different aspects of our behavior.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FktsFcooIG8 Showing the brain image to illustrate her points about the impact of video games on the brain, she states the effects are on the brain networks that control attention: Parietal Lobe directs our attention; Frontal Lobe manages the way we sustain attention; Anterior Cingulate controls how we are located in the regulated attention and resolve conflict. The research proves these three brain networks are much more capable of producing desired results in people playing action games.

David Williamson Shaffer is a professor of Educational Psychology, and his research interest lies in the relationship between new technologies and how people think and learn. Dr. Shaffer analyzed how computer games help children learn: “Hard fun is, of course, the idea that we take pleasure in accomplishing something difficult: the joy in meeting and mastering a challenge. As a result, when someone is doing something that is hard fun, moment by moment it looks more like ‘work’ than ‘fun’, but the net effect is pleasurable overall." Definitely, children are not the only population charmed by video games. What makes more people squeezing their hands with excitement is video game can also play the role of an anti-aging agent.

Video game is the magic tree house for everyone learning to fly. Video games can empower people by a sense of confidence; besides, different video games have different effects on our brains. Our host Jim also invites our opinions about how to leverage the effects of video games. Let the Candy transport us to the wonderland. Come having Candy Crush to complete our musts. We’ll see the flames in the belly and the resolution in our eyes.

Mirror, mirror on the wall, what is the sweetest of them all?
