On top of spaghetti,
All covered with cheese,
I lost my poor meatball,
When somebody sneezed.
It rolled off the table,
And on to the floor,

Sharing the same mood-- happy-- is more beautiful than sharing any tasty food. While having meals with others, we are in social events—what makes us happy is not only eating but also enjoying being with others. Irish-born English novelist Laurence Sterne (24 November 1713 – 18 March 1768) pointed out “Respect for ourselves guides our morals; respect for others guides our manners.” Manners can help us understand mutual expectations and avoid embarrassments. Thanks to our host Nathan, this week’s topic is waiting for Happiers to expand: 15 international food etiquette rules that might surprise you.

Manner is regarded as more generalized; etiquette includes specific conducting rules in context. However, people with good manners can practice many rules of etiquette. Furthermore, what is essential is sometimes invisible, and we can feel it with only our hearts. Amy Vanderbilt (July 22, 1908 – December 27, 1974) was an American specialist in etiquette. I love this quote from her: “Good manners have much to do with the emotions. To make them ring true, one must feel them, not merely exhibit them." This week’s article reminds us that food etiquette varies from country to country. Since Taiwan has been a cross-cultural society, it should be a virtue to appreciate the variations.
