Dear Taichung Happiers,

Ode
By Arthur O'Shaughnessy

We are the music makers,
And we are the dreamers of dreams,
Wandering by lone sea-breakers,
And sitting by desolate streams;—
World-losers and world-forsakers,
On whom the pale moon gleams:
Yet we are the movers and shakers
Of the world for ever, it seems.

What is your most unforgettable dream? In The Return of the King (the final volume of The Lord of the Rings), J.R.R. Tolkien painted a vivid picture of the undying lands. “And the ship went out into the High Sea and passed into the West, until at last on a night of rain Frodo smelled a sweet fragrance on the air and heard the sound of singing that came over the water. And then it seemed to him that as in his dream in the house of Bombadil, the grey rain-curtain turned all to silver glass and was rolled back, and he beheld white shores and beyond them a far green country under a swift sunrise.” Do you like Frodo’s dream? Why? While missing his summer vacation and swimming pool, our host Nathan will initiate us into The Wonderful Mysteries of Dreams.

What characteristic of dreams do you prefer? Karen von Blixen-Finecke (17 April 1885 – 7 September 1962) was a Danish writer best known for her work Out of Africa. In this book, she revealed where the dreamers’ happiness comes from. “People who dream when they sleep at night know of a special kind of happiness which the world of the day holds not, a placid ecstasy, and ease of heart, that are like honey on the tongue. They also know that the real glory of dreams lies in their atmosphere of unlimited freedom. It is not the freedom of the dictator, who enforces his own will on the world, but the freedom of the artist, who has no will, who is free of will. The pleasure of the true dreamer does not lie in the substance of the dream, but in this: that there things happen without any interference from his side, and altogether outside his control. Great landscapes create themselves, long splendid views, rich and delicate colours, roads, houses, which he has never seen or heard of...”

Will the conscious awareness of dreams enhance or detract from dreamers’ happiness? After all, “Lucid Dreaming” experiments have held wide appeal for crowds of participants—more and more people don’t hide their eagerness to be conscious in their dreams and to be able to control it. Check out if you love the benefits of lucid dreaming.

Dreaming is a beautiful language. While dreaming, you are the main character of the story, and, at the same time, you are the audience. Our dreaming language can be soft or harsh; it can be splendid or simple; it can be lighthearted or dark-visioned. And, can we have a dream to help us to cope with anything?

Do you think realities symbolize dreams or dreams symbolize realities? Spanish poet Antonio Machado talked in riddles: “Between living and dreaming there is a third thing. Guess it.” Dear friends, join us this weekend and hunt for the answers together.
