Topic: Mean People Fail
Source: http://paulgraham.com/mean.html

Questions for Discussions:

1. How do you think of meanness and mean people? Why do some people get meanness? Is it a good way or efficient way to be successful?

2. The author thinks that nowadays, meanness would cause failure. The spreading influence of internet is one of the reasons. Can you come up with some examples? Or, do you have a second thought? Why?

3. There are two kinds of people: having meanness with tricks to attack opponents versus creativeness with intellectuals seeking new opportunities. In your opinion, which one is more likely to get promotion and become rich in the Taiwanese society? Why?

4. “It has always seemed strange to me...the things we admire in men, kindness and generosity, openness, honesty, understanding and feeling, are the concomitants of failure in our system. And those traits we detest, sharpness, greed, acquisitiveness, meanness, egotism and self-interest, are the traits of success. And while men admire the quality of the first they love the produce of the second.” Do you agree or disagree with this quote? Why? Examples?

5. While facing harsh challenges for scarce resources, how do you do in response to zero-sum games played by others of being mean? Here are some examples:
(1) Just wait and see. An eye for an eye and a tooth for a tooth.
(2) Don’t do me wrong, or I’ll pay you back double.
(3) Keep silence, put on with temporarily, and leave away once having a chance.
(4) Win-win strategies. Seeking opportunities for me and my opponents.
(5) Other ideas.

6. "Don't be evil" is the formal corporate slogan of Google. If the games will be played by intellectuals but not by trickery and deception in the future, how do we encourage thinking with a creative and open mind within an increasingly competitive society in Taiwan?
