Dear Taichung Happiers,
“My grandparents were taking me on a vacation to Disneyland. Grandma was excited for me when we boarded the plane; she exclaimed that I was lucky, because I got the Shakespeare seat. ‘Why is it the Shakespeare seat, Grandma?’ ‘You are in seat 2-B, so it's the Shakespeare seat.’ ‘Don't be silly, Grandma. All the seats on an airplane are Shakespeare seats.’ ‘How do you figure that?’ ‘Well, it's either seat 2-B or not 2-B.’”
Quotes from Shakespeare, anyone? Hey, Happiers, please don’t miss the chance to learn from our host Ben Chi, a native English speaker. He deserves a shout-out for the proper preparation for his first hosting. This article is a map guiding us through the journey of language learning. Welcome to join us in appreciating the journey.
American physician and poet Oliver Wendell Holmes, Sr. (August 29, 1809 – October 7, 1894) underlined the value of language: “Language is the blood of the soul into which thoughts run and out of which they grow.” Moreover, Sociolinguist Vera Regan studied language behaviors and suggested new elements always flow into language which can be a cultural indicator reflecting people’s aspirations, standards, and attitudes. Dr. Vera Regan told interesting and intriguing stories about how people are using language to express their evolving identities-- who they are and who they are becoming. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jAGgKE82034Jeremy Lin’s fluency in Chinese https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0O7tk6E-PVo reminds us of how Professor David Williamson Shaffer defined Hard Fun. “Hard fun is, of course, the idea that we take pleasure in accomplishing something difficult: the joy in meeting and mastering a challenge. As a result, when someone is doing something that is hard fun, moment by moment it looks more like "work" than "fun," but the net effect is pleasurable overall.” So, enjoy this film https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PwRxznHcaxc and state your strategies of transforming learning hardship into fun.
How do you diversify your English reading list in order not to underestimate every growth opportunity? Have you taken up the Reading Bingo Challenge? http://www.retreatbyrandomhouse.ca/2014/01/reading-bingo-challenge-2014/ What have you enjoyed reading lately? Being a die-hard book lover, I couldn’t imagine how words can spin and fall off a page for anyone until I read this book Flight. http://www.barnesandnoble.com/w/flight-elizabeth-stow-ellison/1012225819?ean=9780823421282 What lesson can we learn from children trapped by reading or learning disabilities? All right, now, relax and let your imagination go wild. Fly with The Book With No Pictures. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3jazc88yCS0 Amazing, isn’t it?
Since last summer, Happiers have been invited to appreciate a short English poem every week. Have you cultivated your persistence? Here is the poem for you:
from “Grin” (by Robert Service)
There's nothing gained by whining, and you're not that kind of stuff;
You're a fighter from away back, and you WON'T take a rebuff;
Your trouble is that you don't know when you have had enough --
Don't give in.
If Fate should down you, just get up and take another cuff;
You may bank on it that there is no philosophy like bluff,
And grin.
Understanding other cultures through learning languages humbles us. We are on the edge of a whole new world, in which almost everyone is composing remixed languages and cross-cultural communication is crucial and constructive. Therefore, love English (which will have more than 50 shapes) like you do. Touch English like you do. What are you waiting for? Join us. Thanks. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QZUUM-tpazUWith Gratitude,
Jasmine
