Dear Taichung Happiers,

Q: Why didn't the thief burgle the library?
A: Because he was afraid the judge would give him a long sentence.

Why can’t we discount the importance of self-education? Author Edmond Mbiaka stressed “School education alone doesn't make one educated. It takes years of self-education from factual resources, properly interpreted experiences in life, and observations before one could become very educated.” Passionately working with kids, our host Vicki is proposing 11 Life Lessons That College Won’t Teach You. Thanks to Vicki for being so Vicki, and we can’t wait to listen to Happiers’ stories.

The combination of school education and self-education can take us everywhere. Self education requires passion. Pritzker Architecture Prize winner Tadao Ando not only has a passion for lifelong self-education, but also devotes himself to educating children in need. He prioritizes human quality; responsibility, independency, and creative mind feature prominently in his expectation for future generations to challenge the unknown future.

Self education requires perspiration and persistence. Meet our best friend Albert Einstein again: “A hundred times a day I remind myself that my inner and outer life depend on the labors of other men, living and dead, and that I must exert myself in order to give in the measure as I have received and am still receiving.” Furthermore, in “Learning how to learn”, Professor Barbara Oakley clarified that you truly gain mastery of what you learn when you combine understanding with practice and repetition in a variety of circumstances. She also instructed some strategic tips as a key to effective learning, such as being a slow thinker--don’t jump into conclusions, and texting yourself with the homework problem several times over several days until the solution flows like a song from your mind. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=O96fE1E-rf8

Self education requires pride and joy along the learning journey for an enduring desire and the spirit of sharing what we learn. Everyone can give or take the pride and joy in unexpected contexts. Check out the story “The Dot” to see why. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=t5mGeR4AQdM Most importantly, time management can help cultivate and broaden our dreams. Here are some time-saving tips for self-education. http://smartblogs.com/leadership/2015/04/01/13-time-saving-tips-for-continuous-self-education/

From “Trailblazer” (by Camille Rose Castillo)

Through fiery determination
I’ll pursue my intuition
With acute awareness
I'll inspire new tradition

Though the odds be great
Against what I believe
Through blazing perseverance
The impossible I’ll achieve

How to return education to the school of life? American writer and philosopher Will Durant (November 5, 1885 – November 7, 1981) restored the authentic self. “Education is a progressive discovery of our own ignorance.” However, you can bridge the gap between school education and self-education, if you finish the homework assigned by Kid President: “What are you teaching the world?”
