Question:
1. What is your understanding to the term “social orientation” ?
What is your social orientation coming from?
2. Does ‘Weird Mind” influence your concept and life?
(“Weird’ means “Western, educated, industrialized, rich and democratic”)
3. This article specifies three theories which make culture difference (summary as below). Which one do you agree more?
(1) On the front line :
At the edge of the frontier, the person tends to score higher on individualism
(2) Germ theory:
The more likely you are to get infection, the more collectivist you are, and the less individualistic
(3) Local agriculture of the region:
Growing rice requires far greater cooperation. On the other hand, wheat farming takes about half the amount of work, meaning that farmers don’t need to collaborate too much.
4. Do you agree with the comment that “western people are more individualistic and eastern people are more holistic? Do you have any real experience?
5. In addition to these three theories mentioned in the article, are there other reasons which cause different thinking between east and west?
