What do English learning and architecture design have in common? Well, it is quite intriguing and inspiring. Still, no worries. Getting our growing anticipation, our host Chi--an architect and university lecturer--is more than qualified to solve this riddle. Why architecture? Are you seized by any enthusiasm or intention of architecture? How can architecture interpret the sprit and soul of a place? American architect, interior designer, writer, and educator Frank Lloyd Wright (June 8, 1867 – April 9, 1959) shed the light on what is needed most in architecture. “Just as it is in a human being, so integrity is the deepest quality in a building...if we succeed, we will have done a great service to our moral nature- the psyche- of our democratic society...Stand up for integrity in your building and you stand for integrity not only in the life of those who did the building but socially a reciprocal relationship is inevitable.” Have you ever considered becoming an architect? Is there any emotional relationship between your childhood memories and any buildings/landscape? To further promote Taiwan, Chi is inviting us to turn our gaze down into the hidden cultural depths of local architecture and to spread the stories globally. The “Air” element in architecture signals growth. Architecture is about physical environment and psychological well-being; architecture is about having faith in life. “How do construction workers party?” “They raise the roof.” It is the mobility of the “Air” element that architects and architecture bewitch us, which instructs us to be comfortable with the external uncertainty and to pursue an internal growth mindset. Personally, I feel so pleased and fortunate to have the moments immovably embracing a special space in my memory—the moments I immersed myself into The Hundertwasserhaus in Vienna, The State Library of Victoria, The British Museum, etc. They are not just a feast for the senses but also a remarkable reminder for a growth mindset. Everyone desires somewhere where the door is always open. Architecture elevates everything about how to enlighten and empower our minds--and how we compose and circulate our stories. American environmentalist Gaylord Nelson (June 4, 1916 – July 3, 2005) had the vision. “Our goal is not just an environment of clean air and water and scenic beauty. The objective is an environment of decency, quality and mutual respect for all other human beings and all other living creatures.” Hopefully, the blissful smile will return fully to everyone’s face, when we witness the perfect architecture symphony of technology, creativity, and integrity.
