An Introduction to Taipei Times
Bringing Taiwan to the World and the World to Taiwan.
1. Concept
Launched on June 15, 1999, the Taipei Times commits itself to "Bringing Taiwan to the World and the World to Taiwan." The Taipei Times is an objective, Taiwan oriented newspaper devoted to providing accurate information to the local and foreign communities in Taiwan.
The Taipei Times also aims to enhance the island's profile among international readers. We print penetrating reports on local politics, society, economics and culture, as well as balanced and comprehensive analysis of Taiwan's political scene. The Taipei Times is one of the most authoritative and trusted voices among English media in Asia.
2. Format
The Taipei Times is a daily English newspaper with 20-24 pages. It showcases three main sections of local and international news, along with sports and special local features.
The first section features Highlight News, Taiwan News, Asia News, World News, Taiwan Business and World Business; the second section focuses on Youth Central consisting of Bilingual Times, Leisure and Sports, while the third section (published every Friday and Sunday) features Around Town, Sunday Features, Arts & Books and other life information.
In short, the Taipei Times enables readers to care about local and foreign news and provides readers with better reference materials for English learning. Without any doubt, the Taipei Times is indeed an excellent and quality English language newspaper.
"To realize the objective of producing an international-standard daily English-language newspaper in Taiwan," we at the Taipei Times have assembled more than 50 of the finest editors, reporters and production people from over eight English-speaking countries.
All of the staff follow the Liberty Times Group's "Taiwan First, Liberty Foremost" concept, emphasizing professional and non-partisan reporting. As such, the Taipei Times has gained domestic and overseas readers' recognition. In addition, our web site (www.taipeitimes.com) is available for all readers from around the world. Taipei Times has indeed become a daily English-language newspaper that properly represents the voice of Taiwan.
3. Awards
For three consecutive years, the Taipei Times has won the Society for News Designs' "World Best-Designed" awards. In 2002, 2003, and 2004, we won an Award of Excellence in the 23rd edition Best of Newspaper Design Competition in the category, Lifestyle/Features page.
Other awards received were from the New York Times and Canada's National Post, not only demonstrating the high standard of the Taipei Times' reporting, editing and design, but also showing that the Taipei Times' professional design standard is able to compete with the best English-language newspaper in the world.
4. Circulation
The Taipei Times has recorded a rapid growth in its circulation as a result of its excellent reporting and coverage of local and foreign news, a mature distribution channel of the Liberty Times Group (parent company of Taipei Times) and a high-speed state-of-the art printing equipment at its local printing facilities in north, central and south Taiwan.
As of October 2002, the Taipei Times has recorded a daily circulation of 285,130 copies, which breaks down to 188,000 copies circulated daily in northern Taiwan, 55,000 in the central part of the country and 40,000 in the south, and these figures are still increasing steadily.
