South Park and Philosophy
The publishers Blackwell have given given South Park Stuff.com an exclusive preview of a new South Park book, due for release December 2006 (in the US): South Park and Philosophy: You Know, I Learned Something Today.
Part of The Blackwell Philosophy and Pop Culture Series, South Park and Philosophy is a smart and candid look at one of television's most subversive and controversial shows. Are American voters inevitably forced to choose between a turd and a douche? Does South Park's blasphemous humor go too far? If it's OK to ridicule Islam, is it OK to skewer Scientology? Addressing these and other perennial questions from the show and looking at the contemporary social and political issues that inspire each episode, this book unravels everything that might be wrong and could be right about South Park.
Main characters
Kenny McCormick
Kenneth "Kenny" McCormick is voiced by Matt Stone (and, on one occasion, Mike Judge) and is well-known for almost always wearing his orange parka, and for being killed in nearly every episode.
Since his hood covers his mouth in all but a few scenes in the show's history, his lines are muffled, though occasionally they are intelligible, and closed captioning sometimes clarifies his lines.
Kyle Broflovski
Kyle Broflovski is a nine-year-old Jewish kid, voiced by Matt Stone, and is one of the four main characters in South Park. Matt Stone has said that Kyle was loosely based on himself when he was younger.
He wears a bright green ear-flapped cap (or ushanka), a bright orange jacket with black-edged pockets with a dark green collar, dark green pants and lime-green mittens. He is rarely shown without his cap, but underneath it, he sports a curly red "Jew-fro", a hairstyle which he seems to resent.
He and Stan Marsh alternate as leader of their group/voice of reason. Kyle is quite witty. Unlike his best friend Stan, however, he tends to be quite cautious and is less likely to want to get involved in uncertain situations. He sometimes exhibits better moral standards than the others. Kyle is a constant target of his friend Eric Cartman's anti-Semitic abuse and is frequently singled-out and taunted by Cartman. However, Kyle seems to be unafraid of physical confrontation and has attacked Cartman several times.
Stan Marsh
Stanley "Stan" Marsh is the most normal of the kids, and is generally honest and well-meaning. He is somewhat more assertive than his best friend Kyle, although he and Kyle trade places as the "leader" of the four main characters.
Stan is also notably the skeptic of the group, and is often preachy and very critical of popular trends. This is evident in:
Episode 407 "Cherokee Hair Tampons" when he challenged the character Miss Information and her shop of alternative medicine;
Episode 504 "Super Best Friends" when he helped battle David Blaine's suicidal cult; and
Episode 615 where he accuses psychic medium John Edward of being "The Biggest Douche in the Universe."
However, sometimes it is Kyle who takes on the role as skeptic, and it is Stan who is the gullible one, most notably in Episode 912 "Trapped in the Closet", in which he is drawn into the scientology cult. Stan's and Kyle's personalities while not interchangable, are nonetheless very similar. While Stan is roughly autobiographical of Trey Parker, Kyle is "equivalent" to Matt Stone. Indeed, like Parker, Stan is a proud Denver Broncos fan.
Stan had a girlfriend named Wendy Testaburger with whom he broke up in Episode 714; he used to vomit every time she tried to talk to him. Wendy is now Token's girlfriend.
Eric Cartman
Eric Theodore Cartman, wears a light blue and yellow toque, a red jacket, yellow gloves, and brown pants. He has light brown hair, which has been regularly seen since late in Season 5 (his hair magically turns black whenever he wears his Adolf Hitler outfit). He has a double chin, and is often made fun of because of his obvious weight problem.
According to creators Trey Parker and Matt Stone, when they were creating South Park, they were upset that "nowadays, it would be impossible to put a character like Archie Bunker on TV." But they thought that if he was an animated eight-year-old boy, it might just be allowed. Thus, Cartman was born.
Cartman's personality has changed significantly over the series. While always being self-centered and bigoted, it seems that in the first two seasons of the show he was portrayed as a juvenile, stupid and immature bully with a much raspier voice. It seems that since then he has matured a lot more, with a more aggressive personality and a smoother, slightly deeper voice. His manipulative skills when it comes to getting other people to do what he wants have improved tremendously, along with his overall intelligence; traits particularly espoused in the episode Scott Tenorman Must Die. He is also much more well-informed and far less naïve on political and social aspects of the world, all things that the earlier Cartman would never be aware of.
