The only alternative to being captured is to die fighting.

"being" sounds more 背動
"be" sounds like 主動被 captured

alternative to being captured 中 to 為介繫詞 意為 being captured 為 唯一之 alternative (合理)
alternative to be captured 中 to 為不定詞 指被captured的 唯一 alternative (意思較牽強)

what about this?
The lawyer will name every physician who might be involved, but then half of them will turn out to be people who were responding to the complication and helping, rather than being a cause, and then the complication may emerge as having been unavoidable anyway.
How do you explain those words in red?

How do you explain those words in red?
1. might be involved --> The verb to be here is used to create a passive voice.
2. half of them will turn out to be people --> "To" is used to create an infinitive.
3. who were responding to the complication and helping, rather than being a cause
--> You're looking at parallelism.

Thank you, you make it seem so easy. Must every English learner try to be a grammatic expert like you?

Thank you very much. I just have a particular interest in English grammar, but I am not an expert.
One just needs to learn the English grammar s/he needs to know.
