Reading Newspapers

A Chinese saying goes that the scholar knows the happenings under the sun without stepping outside his gate.

Evidently, it is the function of reading newspapers.

As a matter of fact, reading newspapers makes us well-informed of many events occurring all over the world.

Being good countrymen, we ought to know the big affairs of the country to the full.

Of course, reading newspapers may enable us to be in the grasp of the developing processes of the big affairs of the country.

This is a wrong sentence grammarwise.

In the that-clause, if the relative clause is ignored, it'll become

"a scholar, yet he knows the happenings under the sun". The mistake is self-evident.

It can go this way:

A Chinese saying goes that without stepping outside the gate, the scholar knows the happenings under the sun.

Your offer of those useful sentences is highly appreciated, but -- no offense, Murphy -- if you put a model sentence for people to learn, you should make sure it's a correct one. Thank you again for your great effort.

Thanks a lot!

Health

One might say that money makes the mare go.

In my opinion, health is very valuable and cannot be bought with any fortune.

Therefore, health must be above wealth.

Many people don’t know the value of health until they lose health.

What is the use of wealth if we lose health?

Writing

What I like most to do is writing.

I’m of the opinion that writing can depict what is in the mind.

What’s more, it may improve my mind and strengthen my knowledge.

I made up my mind to be a literary giant from my childhood.

I’m confident that I will realize my ideal some day in the future so long as I study hard.

Success

It goes without saying that no pains, no gains.

It is known to everyone that we must take pains to be successful.

There is a proverb that as you sow, so shall you reap.

No matter what we are, we have to make an effort if we want to be successful.

Although it is sometimes rather hard to take pains, its result is quite worth-while.

Singing

Singing is one of my favorite hobbies.

It may reduce the tense atmosphere of my living.

In other words, it may relieve me of my anxiety and worry.

Lyric songs are what I like most, because their beautiful melodies may cleanse my heart and spirit.

Undoubtedly, singing may enliven my boring and monotonous living.

Swimming

It was more or less ten years ago when I was an elementary schoolboy.

One day I went swimming by myself.

Not knowing how deep the pond was, I jumped into it and was seized with cramp in the leg.

Of course, I was almost drowned and tired to keep calm in vain.

Fortunately, a man jumped into the pond and rescued me.

Students

So far as I know, there are quite a few college students fool around during the four years.

What’s worse, some of them indulge themselves in drinking, gambling, and political activities.

In my opinion, if I were a college student, I would distribute my time into two parts: one for studying and another for amusing myself.

Of course, above all, I would make a project to cultivate sound mind and body.

Last but not least, I would be much concerned about the future of the country.

Mother

No matter where I am, I always think of my mother.

She is not only diligent but also economical.

Being a mother with two children, she often works from early morning till night.

In addition, she never complains about her weighty housework.

On the contrary, she works silently all the time; she is really a typical virtuous Chinese woman.

Work

It can be easily proved that it pays to be industrious.

Nevertheless, it won’t go only to work without taking a rest.

We may loaf on the job once in a while.

Laziness may supply us with the chance of taking a rest.

To cite a common saying, we take a rest with a view to taking a longer walk.

Time

There is a Chinese saying that laziness in youth spells regret in old age.

Really, we must cherish and make good use of every minute to do anything worthy of being done.

In other words, we won’t put till tomorrow what we can do today.

Seeing that life is so short, there is no use wasting time.

From this point of view, we can find that it’s necessary for us to strike iron while it is hot.
