Topic Discussion: Does Birth Order Determine Personality? <--- Click Me (文章)

Questions for Discussion:

Session 1

(1) Is your personality different from your siblings'?

(2) How did your parents treat you and your brothers and sisters? Did they have different expectations for you?

(3) Do you agree that the first-born is more responsible, the middle-child is often neglected, and the last-born is usually a risk-taker? Do you have any examples from your experience?

Session 2

(4) Did you fight with your siblings when you were little? What did you fight for?

(5) Have you ever had sibling rivalry? What did you compete for?

(6) One paragraph of the article mentions:

Conley explains in his book that a lot of other factors affect the behavior of first-borns and last-borns much more strongly. "Early death of a parent, timing of economic shocks to the family, gender expectations and roles in the family, you name it," Conley said, "outside influences, random events — birth order is basically at the bottom of that list."

Other then birth order, what factors do you think are the most important in determining behavior of first-borns and last-borns?

This topic reminds me a famous psychologist, Alfred Adler.
He is the one who came up with the concept, Birth Order.
You can check the following reference.

I'll be there for you.

Well...it might be an eastern belief that the first-born child should take care the whole family. They are supposed to look after their siblings s and take care their parents if the first-born child is male. Mabye because of the expectations, the first-born child become more responsible. I have to admit that I always ask elder brother/sister to clear up the mess left by their siblings in my class. I don't know the reason why I do this. I just take it for granted.Probably this is why the elder become more responsible.

I'm glad that I have an elder sister.

I agree Alfred Adler's interpretations on birth order roles.

I think that In social values, people always treat the eldest children as responsbility-taker, even though the eldest children somtimes have to give up some chance to live a life of pleasure. If the younger brothers(sisters) make some mistakes, the eldest brothers(sisters) take blame. The eldest brothers(sisters) are requested not to go outside for fun and not to do many things freely due to they must set up an example for their younger brothers(sisters).

It might be good to treat the eldest children well. After all, many stresses has been placed on his(her) shoulders.

Hello happiers.
This is wofy lah, long time no see leh. I'm learning Signalish and Malaylish  . just kidding, because I work with them everyday. I probably have funny accent and my Chinese grammar is also changed now, maybe someday I can share with you the different ways of using Chinese :D

It is true that birth order will infulence our personality. A lot reasons make elder children take more responsibility than their sibliling, and their sibilings tend to follow up their big brother or sisiter's step. I believe even couple minutes different order of twins are also influened. Next time maybe we can ask Warren about the difference between Jonathan and Golden.

Looking forward to seeing you guys.

It seems like a lot of people are interested in birth order. As the youngest in my family, I have to admit that I am kinda spoiled and irresponsible sometimes (only at home  ) because my parents never ask anything from me. On the other hand, they expect more from my older sisters. The society has put more pressures on the oldest children who need to set up good examples for their younger siblings. I think the difference lies in how we raise them. The oldest children usually do everything first, so parents get more involved and arrange everything for them. Is that why they become more obedient and responsible? When the younger siblings cry, the older children must yield to them. How can we train the younger ones to be responsible if we spoil them like that? It's also annoying to follow my sister's steps all the time. I even tried to be opposite from them purposely....
