English Idioms

Dear all:

Kevin has spent a lot of time on offering 30 useful English idioms as the following for us. I believe that none of us can say thanks enough to him!

1. Beating Around The Bush ( Avoiding the main topic, Not speaking directly about the issue. )

2. Let The Cat Out Of The Bag ( To share a secret that wasn't suppose to be shared )

3. Smell Something Fishy ( Detecting that something isn't right and there might be a reason for it. )

4. Let kick it into the high gear ( upgrade to a higher level )

5. Hindsight is 20/20. ( refers to the fact that events are better understood after they have already occurred )

6. Notch on your belt ( A success or achievement that might help you in the future )

7. No laughing matter (a serious issue or problem )

8. Off the beaten track (not known or popular with many people )

9. Take a rain check (An offer or deal that is declined right now but willing to accept later. )

10. Get in on the ground floor ( to become involved in something from the beginning )

11. Back to the salt mines (time to return to work, school, or something else that might be unpleasant )

12. carrot and stick ( a policy of offering a combination of rewards and punishment to induce behavior )

13. All the Greek to me ( Meaningless and incomprehensible like someone who cannot read, speak, or understand any of the Greek language would be. )

14. You scratch my back. I will scratch yours. ( You do a favor for me and I'll do a favor for you )

15. Apple of my eye (Someone who is cherished above all others. )

16. Back seat drivers ( People who criticize from the sidelines, much like someone giving unwanted advice from the back seat of a vehicle to the driver. )

17. Blue moon (A rare event or occurance. )

18. Dry run ( Rehearsal. )

19. Highway robbery (outrageous overpricing; a bill that is much higher than normally acceptable but must be paid )

20. Every Cloud Has A Silver Lining: ( Be optomistic, even difficult times will lead to better days. )

21. Everything But The Kitchen Sink: ( Almost everything and anything has been included. )

22. Hit The Nail on the Head ( Do something exactly right or say something exactly right. )

23. bite the bullet ( To face a painful situation bravely and stoically )

24. Icing On The Cake ( When you already have it good and get something on top of what you already have. )

25. That went over my head. ( I don’t understand what you said. )

26. Off The Hook ( No longer have to deal with a tough situation. )

27. On The Fence ( Undecided. )

28. Pick up your ears ( To listen very carefully. )

29. Start From Scratch ( To do it all over again from the beginning. )

30. To pass with flying colors ( succeed at easily )

1. Do you take advantage of those idioms in your daily English conversation? Which idiom impresses you most?

2. Could you share any idioms with us and tell us the origin of this idiom?
