Topic Discussion Article: Why Chinese Mothers Are Superior
Questions for Discussion:
Session 1
1. A list in this article shows several things that Amy Chua's (Tiger Mom) children were never allowed to do. What were you not allowed to do when you were a child?
2.After reading this article do you agree or disagree with Tiger Mom’s strict parenting? Do you think that strict parenting eventually leads to children's happy / successful lives when they grow up?
3.Asian parents tend to scold/ threat their children; however, western parents are extremely anxious about their children's self-esteem. Do you think Chinese parents need to improve their communication skill? Or, you think western parents need to learn some parenting tactics from Chinese parents?
Session 2
4.Describe your mother and father’s parenting style. Do you think your childhood was happy? Will you copy your parents parenting style?
5.What do you see as the pros and cons of “Asian parenting” and “Western parenting”.
6.Many Chinese parents believe that punishment is the most effective way to give their children a lesson. Do you agree with physical punishment for children? What age do you think is appropriate for physical punishment?
