Questions:
1. Have you ever experienced working holidays or considered to go on working holidays? If yes, could you share your experiences and your considerations for working holidays?

2. In your opinion, what kind of characteristics and attitudes should people own before conducting working holidays?

3. Are you aware that Taiwan’s and Germany’s youth seem to have their individual expectations towards working holidays? Please try to analyze the background and reasons in their ideologies.

4. The author takes Michelle’s working holiday experience for an example, and mentions “It is very common in the US and Europe for young people to take a year off before university and travel abroad.” Is the situation easily observed in the Taiwanese young generation? Can the pattern be applied to Taiwanese students as well?

5. Based upon your experiences or ideas, is it necessary to ask for assistance of intermediaries or agencies before going on working holidays?

Dear Taichung Happiers,

Can you picture the scene of the poem “The Importance of Elsewhere” (by Philip Larkin)?

Lonely in Ireland, since it was not home,
Strangeness made sense. The salt rebuff of speech,
Insisting so on difference, made me welcome:
Once that was recognised, we were in touch

Their draughty streets, end-on to hills, the faint
Archaic smell of dockland, like a stable,
The herring-hawker's cry, dwindling, went
To prove me separate, not unworkable.

Living in England has no such excuse:
These are my customs and establishments
It would be much more serious to refuse.
Here no elsewhere underwrites my existence.

The poet Philip Larkin illustrated that experiencing exotic sensation elsewhere can paradoxically confirm our identities. Moreover, the author of “The Lord of the Rings” --J.R.R. Tolkien-- advised people that “The wide world is all about you: you can fence yourselves in, but you cannot for ever fence it out.” For the gathering on July 27th, our host Josef Jian introduces the topic of “Working Holidays” to encourage Happiers’ dreams of exploring the world and discovering ourselves.

Josef, a first-time host for Taichung Happiers, who has completed his doctoral program in cultural research and traveled to numerous countries, warmly reminds us that “You can't get to know a foreign culture by spending a two-week holiday at a resort.” To prove our unfenced existence, we never compromise our dreams. Have the intense desire to fly:

P.S. 1. Please read the article in advance.
