Dear Taichung Happiers,
“Why is Peter Pan always flying?”
“He neverlands.”
Never Never Land. Can you recall one of your best birthdays? What are some of the thrills of growing up? Turn around to ask your Grandma if there are any excitements in old age? I love this quote from American comedian Dennis Wolfberg (March 29, 1946 – October 3, 1994), which sounds bitter-sweet though. “There's one advantage to being 102. There's no peer pressure.” However, there is growing concern—in a larger number of developed and developing countries—about the difficulties caused by a rapidly aging and declining population. http://www.un.org/en/development/desa/population/theme/ageing/index.shtml Therefore, our host Ben, thoughtful as always, urges Happiers to ponder over this topic: Japan’s depopulation time bomb.
While calculating the cost of aging population, remember that even aging trees still contribute. “..................Yes, it is an old tree, but it still contributes. What have any of you contributed so far? To your race, your religion, your country?....................” https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7xj_wWnoSsI&app=desktop What makes old age beautiful? English poet and painter D.H. Lawrence crafted a vision of it.
Beautiful Old Age
By D.H. Lawrence
It ought to be lovely to be old
to be full of the peace that comes of experience
and wrinkled ripe fulfilment.
The wrinkled smile of completeness that follows a life
lived undaunted and unsoured with accepted lies
they would ripen like apples, and be scented like pippins
in their old age.
Soothing, old people should be, like apples
when one is tired of love.
Fragrant like yellowing leaves, and dim with the soft
stillness and satisfaction of autumn.
And a girl should say:
It must be wonderful to live and grow old.
Look at my mother, how rich and still she is!
And a young man should think: By Jove
my father has faced all weathers, but it's been a life!
How do you define aging? What do you think of the meanings of work and retirement? Under what conditions do the elderly achieve satisfaction? To assist the aging population, which is the top priority: housing, medical care, community care or intergenerational relationship? The panel discussion at Harvard School of Public Health examined in more details in The Science Behind Healthy Aging. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gfCWTNDic6oNever Never Land. Franz Kafka (3 July 1883 – 3 June 1924), one of the most influential authors of the 20th century, had advised people: "Anyone who keeps the ability to see beauty never grows old." Remember that following this instruction will benefit society as a whole. Remember, too, that exercise and laughter are the most effective anti-aging agents. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N3RwiJb-5pUFly high!!! Best Wishes,
Jasmine
