Dear Taichung Happiers,
Q: What do you call an Internet mystery?
A: An e-nigma.
If Steve Jobs had met Shakespeare, what could have created the sparkle of excitement in their eyes? Well, ask Romeo and Juliet, please. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=m6fNYL2NU9E And, don’t miss the opportunity of meeting our host James, who is examining What the Internet Is Doing to Our Brains. Having achieved his Doctorate degree in Neuroscience, James is starting his research career in the U.S. next month. What is equally exciting is his musical talent—he finally shared it during last gathering—which inspires heartfelt joy.
The author of this article, Nicholas Carr, used striking metaphors for different “nourishment” intake before and after The Internet Feast: “Once I was a scuba diver in the sea of words. Now I zip along the surface like a guy on a Jet Ski.” Likewise, the sincere declaration from science writer and inventor Arthur C. Clarke (16 December 1917 – 19 March 2008) still lingers in our minds. “Before you become too entranced with gorgeous gadgets and mesmerizing video displays, let me remind you that information is not knowledge, knowledge is not wisdom, and wisdom is not foresight. Each grows out of the other, and we need them all.” To acquire knowledge and wisdom, we have to analyze and evaluate what we read, and then develop our own association and critical thinking. Now, have a nice cup of coffee and prepare yourself for breathing Deep Reading. http://www.newyorker.com/science/maria-konnikova/being-a-better-online-readerHowever rich you are, you can have only one-way ticket to The Internet Feast; the journey can be incredible, as long as you can resist the lure of online multitasking (which could be Lorelei). According to the conclusion of his study, Professor David Meyer, director of the University of Michigan’s Brain Cognition and Action Laboratory, admonished people that even brief mental blocks created by shifting between tasks can cost as much as 40 percent of someone's productive time. Author and speaker Matt Perman also gives us a reminder. “The scarcity of time is the reason we have to concentrate on one thing at a time.” Yes. No concentration, no contemplation. It takes practice to plug in better. http://www.theatlantic.com/technology/archive/2012/02/plug-in-better-a-manifesto/252873/WAYS FROM CONCENTRATION TO WISDOM (by BL Devnath)
something's known better
concentration brings fairest
pointed from the whole
with and through insight
ways are felt from where they come
from at the same time
without reaction
drawn a nice picture clearly
haze's gone all out
Neuroscientist Joy Hirsch firmly believes “There’s a little genius inside all of us. We are all creative. We are all pioneers.” Thanks to the Internet, which has kept pushing us forward, the little genius inside ourselves can surface again to build the bridge of collaboration. The more we know we don’t know, the closer we are sailing to the Humanity Island. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jAjYT70D85IIt is so bittersweet to congratulate James (how we wish the elite could stay and teach in Taiwan), and we’ll hold a farewell party for him on Oct 17th. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kxjwb5cXTI0 Also, welcome to join us this weekend in bringing our blessings to James (here is mine: Don’t come back to Taiwan until you win the Nobel Prize). Looking forward to meeting every Happier’s little genius. Join us. Thanks! With Gratitude,
Jasmine
