20151107, Gathering, Tainan Happy English Club
圖檔

With dengue fever cases soaring in southern Taiwan since this summer, many Tainanese’s lifes have been interrupted and influenced. Houses have been spraying for mosquitoes. Residents work hard for eliminating vector breeding sources. Thus, we count our blessings that new dengue fever reported this week decline. That’s one of news we shared at this meeting. Today Cherry, Amber, Janice, Ken(it’s me) were present at the gathering. Amber talked about her traveling in Japan not long ago. According to her saying, you only need to know a little Japanese and English as a tourist in Japan. Traveling to Japan seems getting popular for Taiwanese nowadays.

Then we began our funny little game: Raising Our Happy Challenge!
The rule is as follows:
Please build a supporting structure to make a HEC flap to stand up on a table for at least 10 seconds. You only can use the tools and materials:
1. A pair of scissors
2. A roll of tape
3. A standard A4 sheet
4. A small flag with the HEC logo (1/4 A4 size)
You have 15 minutes to finish your job. The contestant who builds a structure to make the flag up to the highest is the winner.
The final result:
Janice’s flag: 66.5 cm (the winner)
Amber’s flag: 52.5 cm
Cherry’s flag: fail to stand up
You guys can check the pictures below. Please use your imagination to find a best solution for this challenge. Hope this game can bring you some fun, as well as some ideas of creativity.

As for today’s article, we talked about maker movement. All of us are makers. Do you believe that? We’re born makers. We are creatures who need to make. We have this ability to make things, to grasp things with our hands. Dale Dougherty said these words and made an inspiring speech:

Although modern life and mass production already satisfy all we need so that we don’t need to make stuff for our living. For example, make our own clothes. But, instead of the final products, the process of making does the matter. When you put a lot of effort to make your own clothes or bookshelf, the items you make are not just something you can buy from a store but your memory in which you enjoy the process. Also, it is very often that you cultivate your cool ideas through this doing process into so-called creativity. Not only you can come up great ideas doing stuff by yourself but also your creativity can be inspired by other people’s cool works. And joining a maker fair is definitely a good way to widen our horizon of this world about creativity. That will let you feel life is interesting and amazing and never boring. On November 28-29, the maker fair in Tainan will come to the NCKU, Guang-FU campus. Don’t miss it out. You can check the website for the details:

The next gathering will be on November 21. We are looking forward to seeing you then!
