Dear Taichung Happiers,

Q: Why does someone who runs marathons make a good student?
A: Because education pays off in the long run!

Either your teachers’ words itch at your ears or not, can you really close the door of the classroom? American management educator Peter Drucker (November 19, 1909 – November 11, 2005) addressed “We now accept the fact that learning is a lifelong process of keeping abreast of change. And the most pressing task is to teach people how to learn.” Having never been absent since he joined our Club--our host Dun-Yu Yang is exactly what he shares--Yang presents a truly inviting topic: 7 Secrets to Improve Your Ability to Learn (For Students of All Ages).

What can supply good soil and good seeds to cultivate life like flowers? How you make decisions is how you spend your life. To avoid taking things at face value and accomplish effective decision-making, critical thinking is the nutrition for a learning soul. Why our best friend Albert Einstein assigned a high priority to critical thinking is pretty striking: “I want to oppose the idea that the school has to teach directly that special knowledge and those accomplishments which one has to use later directly in life. The demands of life are much too manifold to let such a specialized training in school appear possible [...] The development of general ability for independent thinking and judgement should always be placed foremost.” Now, let these case studies enrich our learning experience of critical thinking.

To dance with life complexities, creative thinking is not a quick fix but a life skill. Physician and author Edward de Bono reassured us that creative thinking is not a talent, it is a skill that can be learnt, and creative thinking can benefit us for the best. "It empowers people by adding strength to their natural abilities which improves teamwork, productivity and where appropriate, profits." Creative thinking requires hard work on learning to suspend our judgment and generate many ideas. So, what kind of tool can help discover our innate creativity? Austin Shaw, founder of Creativity Matters, strongly recommends “Mindfulness”. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_IIFX3qG_Cw

What is learning but another name for confidence? Whatever we learn, however well we learn it, in essence, we should provide our best value to others. Therefore, add this to your personal mission statement: give a confident performance and appreciate the light. According to a survey (of 210 entrepreneurs worldwide) conducted by Forbes insights and Societe Generale Private Banking, American entrepreneurs are the most confident in the World! http://www.forbes.com/sites/forbesinsights/2015/04/07/why-are-american-entrepreneurs-the-most-confident-in-the-world/ However, Israel's first female Prime Minister Golda Meir delivered words of encouragement. "Trust yourself. Create the kind of self that you will be happy to live with all your life. Make the most of yourself by fanning the tiny, inner sparks of possibility into flames of achievement." Hey, my heart is whispering: everyone is their best coach to build confidence. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l_NYrWqUR40
