Dear Taichung Happiers,
Q: How are you getting on with the Internet?
A: Surf far, so good.
What is the most fascinating field of the Internet to you? Why? Google former CEO Larry Page fancied “We should be building great things that don't exist.” Well, you know? Kid President wasn’t always the Kid President—his first dream is to be a great inventor. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=75okexRzWMk For this weekend, our host (also the former President of Taichung Branch) Kevin will lead our discussion about the great inventor, Google.
A great corporation can be, and will be, always remembered for performing the story of our present moment. Steve Wozniak, Co-Founder of Apple Inc., gave us a reassuring smile. “You can make something big when young that will carry you through life. Look at all the big startups like Microsoft, Apple, Google, Facebook, Twitter, etc. They were all started by very young people who stumbled on something of unseen value. You'll know it when you hit a home run.” Then, we wonder, how to apply our critical thinking skills to create value from the silent surfaces? When “Qualify the problem, breakthrough opportunities, qualitative evaluation…..” look big and “Believe in yourself” sounds like a cliché, the instructor at Harvard i-Lab strongly suggested our future stories be put inside out—the most important thing is you have the passion and you believe in yourself. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EYJeGYboPnw Has Google ever put limit on anything they do? See? Google Allo has been launched—whether you will download it or not, the big lesson from Google is creativity. According to the “Creativity Paradox” from Michael Michalko, a highly acclaimed creativity expert, “To create, a person must have knowledge but forget the knowledge, must see unexpected connections in things but not have a mental disorder, must work hard but spend time doing nothing as information incubates, must create many ideas yet most of them are useless, must look at the same thing as everyone else, yet see something different……." So, how would you paint the sky? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=noNTx4YdgMY Now, let’s take a quick peek inside the recipes of Google’s innovation. http://innovationexcellence.com/blog/2016/09/19/learn-from-the-best-googles-nine-principles-of-innovation/ Meanwhile, we can’t afford to forget that a perfect storm is a gift, even for a genius, to acknowledge the authenticity of creativity. The aftertaste of this film Noma has been lingering in my mind. The story is true yet the lesson is not teachable—you have to earn it by yourself—the absolute award for creativity is the happiness of persistent pursuit. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6-OBEJTBzOgDo technology and humanities always conflict? What kind of personalities do you think technology might possess? When we google, what personalities of Google do we look for? We are what we google? http://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2015-12-19/google-s-top-search-terms-of-2015-reveal-asia-s-differing-web-tastes Having conducted empirical researches about human-technology interaction for decades, Professor Sherry Turkle called for more talks rather than googlings. The research results reveal the phenomenon that empathic behaviors are rapidly diminishing in this Information Age due to the deprivation of face-to-face communication caused by social media distractions. http://www.nytimes.com/2015/09/27/opinion/sunday/stop-googling-lets-talk.html?_r=0 Ohhh….., what a beautiful oops! Where is the magic booth of lost-and-found?
“Something Missing” (by Shel Silverstein)
I remember I put on my socks,
I remember I put on my shoes.
I remember I put on my tie
That was printed
In beautiful purples and blues.
I remember I put on my coat,
To look perfectly grand at the dance,
Yet I feel there is something
I may have forgot—
What is it? What is it?...
More positive transformation is a question of fundamental importance proposed by Google former CEO Larry Page. “I think as technologists we should have some safe places where we can try out new things and figure out the effect on society. What’s the effect on people, without having to deploy it to the whole world?” Google has got that one thing which makes your heart race. So, what developments in Google (health, education, travel, art, etc.) would you like to see? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y1xs_xPb46M Come join us to share it out loud. Thanks. With Gratitude,
Jasmine
