Topic: Establishing good eating habits early

Source: Global Voice high-intermediate and advanced June 2007

Take the question, “What is the main ingredient found in French fries?” The average adult’s response would likely be “potatoes.” On the “Art Linkletter Show,” however, a youngster might have offered “oil” as the answer. Come to think of it, the response is probably a fairly accurate one. And that probably explains why a surprising number of kids in the U.K. came up with that for their answer in a recent survey there. (Naturally, the way the question was phrased there was “What is the main ingredient found in ‘chips’?”

The poll was conducted by the British Heart Foundation in an effort to encourage better eating habits among youth in the U.K. In all, 1,002 children aged eight to 14 responded to the questions in polling that conducted late last year. Researchers were surprised to learn that over on in these kids did not know that the main ingredient in chips is the potato. Other unanticipated responses included salt, eggs, flour and even apples. There were even a few who offered ketchup (or catsup) as their reply. Another surprising discovery by the pollsters was the fact that over one-third of the kids did not know that cheese primarily consisted of milk.

The poster campaign was intended to highlight the dangers of eating unwholesome food, while encouraging parents to establish healthy eating habits early. One poster displayed at London Underground stations showed boldly pork, beef and chicken bones with much unappetizing gristle attached. Stamped over the image in red, bold letters was the word, “Censored.” Below read, “The common ingredients of cheeseburgers, hot dogs and chicken nuggets.” Decried by some Tube passengers as a tad too graphic for young eyes, the campaigners replied they were simply providing food for thought.

The dietary intake of many modern families “is shockingly poor in nutrition,” read a press release by the non-profit organization. It also took primary and secondary schools to task for putting “nutritionally deficient” items on their lunch menus. Eating establishments were also encouraged to set aside a special section in their menus for children’s portions. The campaigners bemoaned the fact that a surprising number of restaurants across the nation offered no such thing.

Director General of the British Heart Foundation Peter Hollins said, “Kids have lost touch with the most basic foods and no longer understand what they are eating.” In reporting by Reuters he went on to say, “Banning foods or telling children not to eat them is not enough – we must engage children in understanding why certain foods are less healthy than others.

Concrete suggestions offered by Hollins for remedying the situations were threefold. First of all, he said there should be an end to the marketing of unhealthy food and drinks to children. Secondly, no effort should be spared in making certain that nutritious food is affordably priced, easy to buy and visually pleasing. Last but not least, children should be taught basic concepts about cooking, and their participation in the kitchen should be encouraged, provided that there is parental or adult supervision. Failure to implement these guidelines would result in nearly half-a-million British young people becoming overweight or even obese by 2007, the campaigners claimed.
