Why Playing Hide and Seek Should be Forbidden

文章Karen0710 » 週五 2月 06, 2009 5:34 pm

Yesterday I went to school to train three students for the oral reading competition. After one and half hours of training、I let them take a 10-minute break. I heard them playing loudly in the hallway、but I just ignored them because I was checking something online.
Few minutes later、one boy came back and told me that one of the other boys was locked in a toilet compartment、so I went to the restroom to check what happened. They told me that they were playing hide and seek and it (the ghost) knew someone was hiding in a toilet compartment、that’s why he kicked the door forcefully and caused a big dent on the doorframe、therefore the door couldn’t be opened. I asked the boy who was at fault to cry for help in the general office. Finally、two technicians came and unscrewed the door to save that poor little boy who had been locked in the compartment for 30 minutes. He was totally scared、pale and speechless when he came out. Sometimes children’s behaviors are unpredictable because they don’t think twice before they act. It was an unforgettable experience for me and for that poor little third grader.
This incident reminded me of several tragedies happened in schools when kids were playing hide and seek. If something happens we really don’t know where to find the kids since they are supposed to be "hiding" in some places. It might be too late when we finally have found them. I just think playing hide and seek should not be allowed in campus…..it’s not fun at all!

Actually, we properly never thought too much in our childhood.

In my childhood, I was a very cheery, energetic and elfish boy. When I was in elementary school, I even teased a boy my classmates called “Prince of the Devils.” I always teased him as I felt bored, then the angry guy started to chase me. Actually, I didn’t need to hide somewhere at all, but I ran open and aboveboard in front of him due to I was not strong enough to fight him. He chased me from the first floor to the third floor, and from the third to the first floor. At that time, I really enjoyed the exciting and pleasant feeling very much. However, Karen is probably right. Little play is fine, but don’t overdo it. Nobody knows what will happen if you overdo it ….

It's not fair to ban hide-and-seek just because some stupid kids made some stupid mistakes. We used to play the game so well, always follow the rules, and we had so much fun. The kids would be very disappointed if some teachers forbid them to play such an interesting game for someone's misbehavior.
More importantly, those troubled kids also learned some valuable lessons from this experience. Who knows? Maybe an experience like this would save his life in the future in some way?
I will try my best.

Actually they are outstanding students, that's why they can join Taipei County's competition on behalf of our school. The boy who kicked the door said that he will never solve problems by force (violence) again, I am sure they learned some valuable lessons from this experience. He's one of my favorite students so I couldn't be mad at him. If it were other students, I would be 5 times angrier, I think. Don’t blame me for playing favoritism…it’s hard to punish that smart, handsome little boy.
